Me Before You (2016)

2016 - Me Before You

For a moment, forget about the ruthless Daenerys Targaryen in the Game of Thrones or the very capable Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games. The naive, colourful, and effortlessly funny Louisa Clark is imminent in Emilia Clarke while the stubbornly rich and handsome William Traynor suits Sam Claflin perfectly in the movie, Me Before You by Thea Sharrock of the bestselling novel by Jojo Moyes.

While many will be carried away by the chemistry of Will and Lou especially the hopeless romantics, the creative telling of the unconventional love story through beautiful landscapes, pop love music, and the magic of film technology… There is a very subtle yet commanding message that may confuse the young (and old) or worse, make them accept and believe in life as something to be given up when all is not well. Is life then only to be lived happy? Has pain and sacrifice become a myth?

I have written my thoughts in my Catholic faith’s perspective after reading the book 2 years ago. And today, where everything has become relative and to argue over what is right and wrong have become senseless tragedies… I would like to take off with a positive note on one of the lessons of the book and movie, that is, to live well. Yes, in the midst of despair, find the reason to live. It pulsates with every breath you take. Live fantastic.
