The Lucky One (2012)

The Lucky One

The Lucky One (2012) gives an impression to display Zac Efron as a grown-up as he is paired with Taylor Schilling in this novel adaptation by Nicholas Sparks. Unfortunately, the attempt to veer away from his High School Musical’s boy-next-door image to a tough marine does not convincingly get an excellent performance approval. Though dressed like a marine in battle and more muscular in stature, his screen presence exuded more of a teenager on a stage play rather than a kick-ass marine.

The choice of Taylor Schilling is appropriate even if the chemistry between her and Zac was awkward. Blythe Danner and Jay R Ferguson gave good performances.

The preference of Zac Efron and his mechanically flimsy acting is the movie’s technical low. “You should be kissed every day, every hour, every minute…”, this dialogue by Zac should have tickled us pink and sent us to cloud 9 but only sounded like an expired firecracker.

The movie’s technical high is its beautiful cinematography on Louisiana scenery and old rustic houses. Its musical score is relaxing and nostalgic.

The atmosphere is actually perfect for a romantic movie but obviously failed to charm and melt the heart away.
