The Expendables (2010)

The Expendables

The Expendables (2010) is a non-stop brutal action movie where Hollywood’s tough guys and professional sports superstars jibe and collide. Headed by Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), each member has the expertise of handling guns, knives or explosives. Hence, choose your weapon.

The movie’s technical high relies on its fight scenes and explosives. Specifically the scene where Barney and Lee (Jason Statham) bombed the pier while flying their fighter plane. Some fight scenes were unrealistic. But then that is what action movies are for.

The movie’s technical low is its script. It awkwardly tries to make it the sum of all ideas for an action movie all at once. I believe there are more kick-ass concepts that were not squeezed in because of its cumbersome plot. The scene where Barney and Sandra (Giselle Itié) departs after tyranny has ended was unwieldy. One could feel the graceless impact of the separation.

A good movie is not made of the compression of all good ideas but a smooth execution of brilliance to create a lasting impression. The Expendables was not able to accomplish it but nice try.

Like the expertise of each member of the Expendables, each one of us has that unique mark we can also call our own and use for the building of God’s Kingdom. What is your greatest strength? Use it to complement your greatest weakness and create ripples of blessings for yourself and others. Make God truly proud.
